The Silver Creek International Ukulele Carnival was founded seven years ago as a way to bring together ukulele players for fun and education.  Hosting this annual Carnival is really a labor of love from a whole lot of volunteers, most of whom are ukulele players.  This is a weekend designed to give you plenty of opportunity to spend time playing your ukulele with others.

Are you an agate or Thomsonite hunter? Do you look for interesting rocks on every beach? Do you wonder about all those rock faces you see as you drive by on highway 61? Why is Sugarloaf Cove a world class geologic site?

Join us for an adventure in geology. We’ll explore the fire and ice story of how Lake Superior came to be here, introduce the basic rock types commonly found on the North Shore, and highlight some amazing geologic formations visible as you drive by. It will never be the same ride again- you’ll be looking for all kinds of amazing features and know some of the stories in the stones. $2 per person; $5 per family

The International Wolf Center program presents photos, video clips and includes artifacts such as wolf pelts, skulls, moose & deer antlers, and more for participants to handle.

This is an opportunity to learn about wolves, discuss concerns about them, and get your questions answered by highly qualified wolf specialists. Older children especially may find this a good learning opportunity. Some content may not be quite age appropriate for younger children.

This project has been well-received by teachers around the state, and was funded for presentation in libraries and other venues through the State of Minnesota’s Legislative Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources environmental trust fund.

This event is free, and open to all members of the public.

Special Presentations

World Honey Bee Day, previously known as Honey Bee Awareness Day, is an idea put together by beekeepers in the USA, who petitioned the USDA in 2009 for an official day to honor honey bees and beekeeping. A few years down the line, people across the globe are holding a date of observation every year.

12:30pm – Short guided nature hike focused on pollinators

1:00 pm – Mark Ditmanson will present on the great diversity and importance of the wild bee popluations in Cook County and beyond. The presentation will also cover the practice of beekeeping in the boreal forest.

Approx 2pm Master Gardeners Maxene Linehan and Janet Ditmanson will present on the rationale for providing pollinator plants and habitat in gardens, and also tips and suggestions for planning, choosing plants and other features, and maintenance.

Take a hike with the Nature Center Program Director to explore and learn about the natural history of the Gunflint Trail area.

Make sure you wear appropriate footwear to be on uneven ground, bring along some water, and your camera.

The hike is family friendly and free to the public, meet at the Chik-Wauk Nature Center.

Come watch new one-of-a-kind bronze sculptures emerging in the foundry each Saturday at 4 p.m. throughout the summer and fall at Last Chance Studio in downtown Lutsen. Sculptors Tom Christiansen and Greg Mueller will pour hot metal and explain the casting process.
