History Week

History Week will include history talks, demonstrations and festive gatherings at historical locations throughout the county. 

Schedule of Events

Saturday August 26
1 pm – Harbor History Walking Tour, meet at the Lightkeeper’s Museum in Grand Marais

Saturday August 26
John Schroeder Day at Cross River Heritage Center in Schroeder.
Fireman’s Pancake Breakfast at the Schroeder Town Hall from 8 – 10 am, and activities at Cross River Heritage Center from 10 am – 2 pm.

Tuesday August 29
North Shore Cruise’ “See the Shore Through the Eyes of a Fisherman.”  Join the North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum for a trip aboard the historic boat, the Wenonah.  The ship leaves the Silver Bay Marina at 4:30 for a two hour trip along the coast of Lake Superior with a commercial fisherman describing hazards, historic sites, old fish houses and storms.  You will never view at the coast the same way again. If bad weather, cruise will be August 30th.

Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory in Duluth is one of best locations in the U.S. to view thousands of migrating birds of prey including Eagles, Peregrine Falcons and Broad winged Hawks. Situated on the western end of Lake Superior, migrating birds are funneled by Hawk Ridge as they avoid flying over Lake Superior’s cold waters. Join Hawk Ridge Executive Director, Janelle Long, as she takes you on a fantastic photo journey of this marvelous site. $2 per person; $5 per family

Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center | Grand Marais MN

Take a hike with the Nature Center Program Director to explore and learn about the natural history of the Gunflint Trail area.

Make sure you wear appropriate footwear to be on uneven ground, bring along some water, and your camera.

The hike is family friendly and free to the public, meet at the Chik-Wauk Nature Center.

Donations are appreciated.

Meet at the Cook County Historical Society Museum for a guided, one hour long walk around the harbor. The tour guide will show photos and tell a bit about the development of the harbor and the community. Learn about the how the harbor was once a logging industry shipping mecca!

Occurs every Saturday from June 17 to September 16.

Stop by to see how cast bronze sculptures are made. It’s fiery and exciting when the bronze is liquid. Come watch new one-of-a-kind bronze sculptures emerging in the foundry each Saturday at 4 p.m. throughout the summer and fall at Last Chance Studio in downtown Lutsen. Sculptors Tom Christiansen and Greg Mueller will pour hot metal and explain the casting process.
