Past Fishing

:: Opener
Well, the weather
was iffy and the water was a little on the cold side, but we
ate walleye for breakfast! We've heard fishing was a little
slower, but most folks caught a meals worth of either walleye
or northern.
As the waters warm up, the fish will begin to move and we anticipate
favorite springtime holes producing to expectations.

Superior Fishing Report
From the MN DNR
May 12th
The North Shore Spring creel survey began
on April 15, and covers rivers below the barriers from the Lester
River to the Brule River on Minnesota's North Shore. This survey
targets the rainbow trout fishery and allows us to estimate
fishing pressure, steelhead and Kamloops catch, and catch rates.
The heavy rain and high winds that occurred over the weekend
kept many anglers away from the North Shore. The rivers along
the shore rose significantly, and many were not fishable, especially
in the middle and upper portions of the shore. Water temperatures
dropped into the upper 30s to low 40s.
In spite of the poor conditions, a few anglers ventured out
on the lower shore. Our clerk observed a few Kamloops caught
in the Lester, Sucker and Knife rivers, and a few steelhead
caught in the Sucker River.
On the upper portion of the shore, our clerk saw anglers at
Kadunce Creek, where a few steelhead were caught.
As of today, a total of 385 steelhead and 56 Kamloops have been
captured in the Knife River trap, and 321 steelhead and 1270
Kamloops have been captured in the French River trap or seined
from the pool at the mouth of the French River.
Smelt: We have not received any new reports of smelt in any
rivers. The smelt run has been poor for the last several years,
and we do not expect much more this year.
