Vacation Guide 2017

ART FESTIVALS, FAIRSAND

sales join studios and galleries in

promoting local, regional and national

works. Stop at the local visitor center

and inquire about showings, sales,

events, openings and tours.

Music flourishes on the shore.

Musicians find stages at local taverns,

restaurants, lodges, arts centers and

are showcased at festivals and across

the local radio waves.Watch for posters

and ask at check-in who is playing

where. If you’re musically inclined,

watch for open-mic nights, too!

Art is not limited to a gallery or event.

Artisans display their work in seasonal

gardens and snow sculptures, charming

storefronts, public statues and murals

and at readings and salons. It is not

unusual to come across painters

working on a landscape, photographers

capturing a moment, a group of knitters

and weavers working their craft and

even a lone bagpiper playing for the

big lake. Take the time to treat yourself

to someone else’s interpretation of the

beauty of the shore.

When is a trail a road and when is it something else? Good question!

The four trails that are roads are all in Cook County, [83.4] Sawbill,

[93.0] Caribou, [110.0] Gunflint and [127.0] Arrowhead and only the

Gunflint is entirely paved. The Gitchi Gami bike trail runs parallel

Highway 61 and is paved, while the Superior Hiking trail is really a

path through the woods inland from Highway 61 and definitely not

paved. See page 25 for more about hiking and page 17 for biking, and

check out the handy map inside the back cover and plan a drive up

the trails... er... roads.
