We received icy rain for two days and the ice on the trees have taken down many branches. Most trails are blocked by trees and branches. The ski and snowmobile trails are closed and probably won't be open any more this season. Hiking and snowshoeing are good. Snowshoeing through the woods is great as the snow holds you up easily. Lots of ice and water coming over the falls. The waterfalls opened up yesterday. This weekend should be great river watching on the North Shore. Visitors are seeing signs of fox, pine marten, wolf, deer, and eagles. Visitor Center is open 9:00 am to 4:00 pm daily

With all of the recent freezing rain and ice causing many trees and branches to break and fall, our ski trails are closed for the remainder of the season. Snowshoeing or winter hiking are other great activities to consider at Split Rock. Snowshoes are available for rent at the park office for $6.00/day. The visitor center at the lighthouse historic site is open from 11am - 4pm Thursdays through Mondays, although tours are not offered in winter. The grounds may be accessed every day during daylight hours. Park permits are required.

George H. Crosby Manitou State Park
Trails are not groomed for skiing. Backcountry "bushwack" skiing is great on the Yellow Birch, Matt Willis and Middle Trails. All park trails are open for snowshoeing and are great backcountry hikes.
CAUTION: This park is very remote. Make proper plans before you visit the park |
An ice storm has made our trails impassible and created extremely hazardous conditions in the woods.
19 March |
(in Tofte) Sugarbush Trail System ::
We are sorry to report that mother nature has dealt us a season-ending hand
this week. Typically, we groom well into April, which looked probable again
this season with our excellent base. A major ice storm is a sobering
reminder of how much cross country skiing is at the mercy of the elements.

North Shore State Trail
The trail winds its way through remote, wooded areas behind the bluffs that overlook Lake
Superior. From there you can see some of Minnesota's most rugged and beautiful scenery.
Due to the ice storm and rain that was received along the shore this week, the trail is no longer in rideable condition. Trees & branches are down along and on the trail making the trail impassable. The local club trails along the shore also have down trees & branches making them impassable.
A recorded message on trail conditions is also available at 218-834-1439.
