The Monarch is our state butterfly but is facing population decline. Come learn about this beautiful insect, and meet live Monarch members in all stages of life. Perhaps you’ll even be able to take one home to raise and release on your own! Drop by to find him inside the Visitor Center.

Mammals: Predator or Prey?

1:30-3:30pm
A mammal’s skull tells the story of its fight for survival. Come learn the story of some of our favorite wildlife mammals that are common along Lake Superior. Feel pelts and hold skulls of unique north woods mammals. Learn how teeth tell a predator from a prey. Discover some mammal adaptations that help them survive. Meet under the tent at the Visitor Center Trail Junction.

Marie Westerman & Jill Ewald Exhibit

Marie Westerman is a fiber artist who does pictorial weaving. Jill Ewald is an artist who works with many mediums including oil paint, graphite, conte crayon, encaustic and charcoal, and recently, thread.

Johnson Heritage Post is open Monday through Saturday from 10 – 4 (closed Tuesdays) and Sunday 1 – 4.

Cattails and lily pads are a scarce commodity on Lake Superior, so who steps in to fill those important producers’ shoes and support the rest of the life in the big lake?

Learn about Lake Superior’s green stuff – algae – their amazing ecology, diversity and beauty, and learn why they can sometimes become too much of a good thing. Scientists are seeing an increase in production in unexpected and unusual places in the Great Lakes, and a new citizen science effort is underway to help find answers to why this is happening. Come explore, wonder, and learn how to contribute.

Geology Rocks Gooseberry

Listen to the rocks as they tell of lava flows, glaciers and roaring rivers on this hike of discovery. Join the Naturalist around the middle and lower falls. Majority of the hike will involve descending stairs. Meet at fireplace inside the Visitor Center. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

Grand Marais Garden Club Flower Show. Refreshments will be served. There will be plant exchange! Bring one, take one home.

The public are invited to bring a floral arrangement – you do not need to be a garden club member. To participate, bring your arrangement on Saturday morning from 9-11am. Please identify the flowers in your arrangement.

Meet at the Cook County Historical Society Museum for a guided, one hour long walk around the harbor. The tour guide will show photos and tell a bit about the development of the harbor and the community. Learn about the how the harbor was once a logging industry shipping mecca!

Occurs every Saturday from June 17 to September 16.
