Exploring Icelandite Coastal Fen

“Almost an SNA: Exploring Icelandite Coastal Fen”

Scientific and Natural Areas (SNAs) protect the best of Minnesota’s remaining natural heritage – places like remnant prairies, old-growth forests, natural shorelines, and rare species habitat. Join us for an outing to Icelandite Coastal Fen, a site just east of Colvill that boasts unique geology, a rare wetland, and undeveloped stretches of Lake Superior coastline. It has also long been nominated for SNA status, a process that has involved many partners and may soon be coming to fruition. Come learn about what is involved in a site becoming an SNA and what has made Icelandite Coastal Fen a place of interest for the program for over 20 years.

Meet at 1:00pm in Grand Marais (Whole Foods parking lots) if you’d like to carpool to location, or meet right at the site at 1:30. There is a small parking lot off of Hwy 61 by mile marker 121. Warm, layered clothes and durable footwear are recommended.

For more information, visit www.mndnr.gov/snas/events or call (218) 735-3962.

Winter Gathering & Dance feat. the SplinterTones
Winter Gathering & Dance feat. the SplinterTones

Hovland Town Hall | Hovland MN

People of all ages from all over the county and beyond are invited to enjoy the light and warmth of community celebration at this dark, cold time of year when we need it most.

The SplinterTones are a six-piece band who play a zesty mix of tunes in an arrestingly original style. With their rousing rhythmic grooves, vibrant harmonies, and colorful stage presence, the SplinterTones crowd dance floors up and down the shore and beyond. The SplinterTones are: Leah Thomas, accordion and vocals; Rick Brandenburg, drums; Jeff DeShaw, bass and vocals; Max Bichel, violin and vocals; Liz Sivertson, saxophone, clarinet, and vocals; and John Gruber, guitar and vocals.

There’s no admission fee, but donations will be gratefully accepted.

This event is funded in part by the Opp-Hvidston Foundation, a small, private family foundation created in 2015 by Patricia Hvidston and Roger Opp, residents of East Cook County, MN.
