Drury Lane Books | Grand Marais MN

Windy Girl is blessed with a vivid imagination. From Uncle she gathers stories of long-ago traditions, about dances and sharing and gratitude. Windy can tell such stories herself—about her dog Itchy Boy and the way he dances to request a treat and how he wriggles with joy in response to, well just about everything. This playful story by Brenda J. Child is accompanied by a companion retelling in Ojibwe by Gordon Jourdain and brought to life by Jonathan Thunder’s vibrant dreamscapes. The result in a powwow tale for the ages.

Brenda & Johnathan will read their new children’s book and discuss the making of the story and the Ojibwe translation process.

Brenda J. Child is a professor of American studies at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Gordan Jourdain teaches at the Misaabekong Ojibwe Language Immersion program for Duluth Public Schools. Jonathan Thunder is an award-winning painter and digital media artist residing in Duluth.

Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center | Schroeder Minnesota

There are so many different kinds of rocks on the Sugarloaf Beach! How did they form, how did Lake Superior get here, did all these rocks come from around here, how do you know an agate when you find one, what about Thomsonite? All sorts of questions come up when you look at rocks. Margie, our Naturalist will hang out on the Sugarloaf beach every Sunday and answer questions about rocks, and periodically take interested people for an exploration of the lava flows on Sugarloaf Point. Come any time between 10 and 1. $5 per person; $10 per family.
