The Story of Janice Matichuk, Quetico Ranger

Date: July 18, 2021

Time: 2:00 pm

Location: Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center

Event Description

Her Island is a new book by local author Joe Friedrichs that shares the story of Janice Matichuk, the longest-serving ranger in the history of Quetico Provincial Park. Located near the end of Minnesota’s iconic Gunflint Trail, Quetico is the heart of North America’s “canoe country.”

Matichuk first set foot on her island in Quetico in 1985. Tragically, she passed away in August 2020 after she fell ill from brain cancer. This is a story about life inside one of North America’s most remote places. It is also a reflection of a woman who broke through barriers and refused to conform to societal norms.

Join author Joe Friedrichs, to learn more about the process of writing Her Island and personal insight into both the book and the longest-serving ranger in the history of Quetico.

The presentation is free and family friendly – donations are always appreciated.

Masks will be mandatory during the indoor presentation.
